This is why we love club sandwiches. You’ll find them at Babingtons in their original recipe and with our own variations to choose from. Our portions can be small or larger but above all we serve them at any time of day.

Club Sandwich: a 100% Anglo-Saxon recipe!

Before we tickle your taste buds with Babingtons club sandwich let’s have a look at the origins of this famous recipe.

The History of the club sandwich

It is neither a completely American invention, but neither is it absolutely English. The recipe for a club sandwich is a mix of the two cultures. If we take a closer look at the name, all will be revealed.

The word sandwich is of course quintessentially British, and came to be, solely to describe two slices of bread and something in between!

The story goes that in 1762 John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, between one game of cards and another, often required a quick snack, this involved two slices of bread with a piece of meat between them. It became the norm for other regular members of the Gentleman’s Club where John played to ask for “what Sandwich having”. And so, as the order was repeated over and over it was easy to end up with “I’ll have a sandwich”.

But how do we come by the Club Sandwich? Let us hop across the Pond and visit New York. It seems that the very first club sandwich was prepared at the end of the 1800’s in a gambling club called the Saratoga Club House in the town of Saratoga Springs.

The greatest fan of the Club Sandwich was of course, Edward VIII who was so fond of these sandwiches that he spread the word, and the name, ending up with making them famous. And so, the circle is closed.
